Meoto Iwa, meaning “Married Couple Rocks,” are two rocks side by side above the sea surface that symbolize a good married couple. The larger rock represents the husband, and the smaller rock represents the wife. Between the two rocks hangs a shimenawa, a sacred Shinto rope. While the Meoto Iwa in Ise’s Futamigaura is nationally well-known, the one in Itoshima’s Futamigaura is popular among the local people.
