Yanagi Machi Area
The former Nagasaki Highway in the Yanagi Machi area retains a quiet, historic ambiance, with traditional residences and merchant shops dating back to the Meiji and Taisho periods.
The Nagasaki Highway was a 57-ri (approximately 224 km) long road that connected Tokiwa Bridge in Kokura to Dejima in Nagasaki during the Edo period. It served as a vital artery, transporting Western culture and new technologies from Dejima—Japan’s only open port—to the shogunal capital of Edo. The highway was constantly busy with travelers, including daimyo processions and Dutch envoys. It was also romantically known as the “Sugar Road,” as sugar imported through Nagasaki was transported along it, leading to the development of sugar-based confectioneries in the regions it passed through.
