Hirado is located in the northwest of Nagasaki Prefecture. Today’s city area used to be the castle town of the Matsuura clan. It was also a trading place between Japan and the West before the national isolation in the Edo period. Therefore, some Western influences can be seen here. It has a unique atmosphere, mixing Western and Japanese cultures. A good example of this is the spots where you can view a church and a Buddhist temple in one sight. Additionally, you can see historic constructions such as the castle, Dutch trading house, and cathedrals.
