t is often called the “Niagara Falls of the Orient.” These waterfalls are unique because they suddenly come into view while you are moving through the flat rice field area. It is believed that the bedrock was formed by the cooling and solidification of a large pyroclastic flow from the eruption of Mt. Aso 60,000 years ago. The bedrock features a structure called a ‘columnar joint,’ which is prone to vertical fractures due to numerous cracks. This results in a beautiful structure similar to Niagara Falls.
