Takachiho Gorge is a ravine formed by the Gokase River in Miyazaki Prefecture, designated as both a Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument.

The gorge was formed by a massive eruption of Mount Aso 120,000 years ago:

→ A pyroclastic flow traveled along the river, came to a halt, and solidified into pillar-like formations.
→ Over time, the river eroded these solidified rocks.
→ This process resulted in the gorge seen today.

Manai Waterfall
According to legend, the deity Amenomurakumono Mikoto descended to earth with the grandson of the Sun Goddess and found the land lacking water. The deity then placed a “seed of water,” which became a spring. The water from this spring now flows as the graceful cascade known as Manai Falls.
