It used to be the villa of the Shimazu, the daimyo family of Satsuma Province. It is one of the most typical daimyo gardens. It provides visitors with a great view of Mt. Sakurajima, the old houses where the lords stayed, and Kagoshima food specialties including Jumbo Yaki. Annexed to this garden are a museum displaying items from old factories that produced Western goods and a factory demonstrating the making of Satsuma glassware.
The things you must check out when visiting Sengan-en Garden include the nail covers, reverberatory furnace, and hydroelectric power generator.
