Red Leaves
The Japanese word “紅葉” (Red Leaves) has two meanings, each with a different pronunciation. One is “Koyo,” which refers to the phenomenon of green leaves of deciduous trees turning red or yellow in autumn. The other is “Momiji,” which means Japanese maple trees. The typical one is called Iroha-Momiji, often seen in Japanese gardens with beautiful red leaves. The leaf has five to seven lobes. The cute, small shape is often compared to the hand of an adorable baby.
Momiji Gari, or Momiji (red leaves) viewing, is one of the popular pastimes in autumn.
