Kokura Castle

The current main keep is a reconstruction from the Shōwa Era. Its white walls and gray roofs make it exceptionally beautiful. The castle has a unique design in which the fifth floor is larger than the fourth, a style called Kara-tukuri(Chinese style) from the Edo period. Visitors can climb to the top floor, where each level features exhibits about the castle and its history. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kokura town. The castle also offers information about Musashi Miyamoto, the legendary samurai hero.

Musashi & Kojiro

The duel between two samurai warriors on Ganryū Island in the Kanmon Strait is a story frequently depicted in novels, movies, TV dramas, and manga. It is one of the most popular historical tales in Japan, largely due to the novel “Miyamoto Musashi” by Eiji Yoshikawa. Although the story contains many fictional elements, most Japanese people regard it as historically significant. A statue of the two warriors stands in the open space in front of Kokura Castle.
