Reiji Matsumoto

Reiji Matsumoto, a renowned manga artist, was from Kokura. The city leverages this connection for community promotion, evident in the bronze statues of his characters at Kokura Station. He rose to prominence as a top manga artist after the anime adaptation of his work, Space Battleship Yamato, became a major hit. A distinctive and fan-favorite feature of his style is his futuristic machine design, known as the “Reiji Meter.” These machines are characterized by circular indicator instruments with scales, resembling the dials of a chronograph watch.
