Kirishima Shrine

Kirishima Shrine is one of the best “power spots” (spiritual places believed to bring good luck) in southern Kyushu. This shrine is part of an area also designated as a Geo Park, which is staged in Japanese mythology as the landing place of a god’s grandson. The main pavilion is designated as a National Treasure. The legendary samurai hero Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife visited this shrine after their marriage; their trip, which included this visit, is considered Japan’s first recorded honeymoon. The shrine offers visitors nine types of divine blessings called “Kumenmamori.”
