Kagoshima Prefecture is the nation’s second-largest producer of tea, accounting for 35% of the total. (First is Shizuoka at 40%, third is Mie at 8%, followed by Miyazaki and Kyoto.)

In terms of quantity and area of tea fields, the production in Minami-Kyushu City, which includes the Chiran area, is ranked number one among all municipalities.

Thanks to well-drained, fertile soil created by volcanic ash, a mild climate, and abundant sunshine, the Chiran area produces high-grade, specialty tea.

High-grade Chiran tea is often grown using a special method called “kabuse-cha.” This involves covering the tea plants directly with a soft black gauze-like cloth about a week before picking. This process enhances the tea’s flavor and reduces its bitterness.
